Meetings
Meetings are a key part of the SAA recovery programme. They help
us stay focused on our recovery - at the very least, if we're in
a meeting we're not acting out!
More than that though, meetings break the isolation many addicts
experience. We find people recognise our stories and identify with
us. We find people who accept us for who we are, not what we have
done.
Meetings help us share our struggles and successes in our recovery.
They help us build a fellowship of other addicts whom we can call
to check-in or when we are tempted to slip.
What to expect?
A meeting usually lasts around 1 1/2 hours and usually includes:
- Check-in - an opportunity for everyone to talk
about their progress in recovery that week, to share their experiences
and be accepted
- Discussion - a chance to review and discuss
a relevant topic or recovery step
You do not have to speak if you don't want to but many members
find it helps to talk about their experiences.
Meetings also give the opportunity to borrow recovery literature
- leaflets and tapes which can teach us more about recovery - and
to find a sponsor.
There is no charge for coming to meetings although we request a
small donation to cover the cost of the room.
At present, a typical meeting would be around 8 people, mostly
male, with a broad spread of ages from early 30s upwards.
Confidentiality
We work on a first name basis to ensure confidentiality. However,
we cannot extend that confidentiality if you tell us you are involved
in sexual violence or any sexual activity involving minors. We will
report any such instances to the police and co-operate with their
enquiries.
Where are meetings held?
There are currently 4 weekly meetings in Scotland - two in Glasgow,
one in Dundee and one in Edinburgh.
